'The “door of faith” (Acts 14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church.  It is possible to cross that threshold when the word of God is proclaimed and the heart allows itself to be shaped by transforming grace.  To enter through that door is to set out on a journey that lasts a lifetime.' (par1)

These are the opening words of Pope Benedict’s Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, introducing the Year of Faith which began on 11th October 2012 and which will run through until the Feast of Christ the King on 24th November 2013.  From conversations with other people it would appear that the Year of Faith has captured the minds and imagination of many Catholics.  It was certainly heartening at the meeting of our own Diocesan Council of Laity in November 2012 to see that parishes across the diocese have drawn up plans for a whole variety of celebrations, events, pilgrimages and discussions during this coming year.  There was also the wish expressed that at least some of our special events should be done together with other Christian Churches.

We believe that our faith is a priceless treasure that should never to be kept stored away for no one to see it –  but it is to be lived and shared “It is the love of Christ that fills our hearts and impels us to evangelise” (Porta Fidei par 7)

AWAITING A NEW BISHOP

Photo: Vic Burton

Finally on a personal note: we had hoped that our new bishop would have been named during the past year, but hopefully we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer.  In the meantime I would like to again thank everyone who has ensured that the day to day life of our diocese has continued and for all the support that you have all given to me personally.  Please continue to pray for the appointment of a new bishop: for the man who is chosen and for those responsible for the process of discernment and appointment.

With all good wishes,

Fr David Bagstaff

Diocesan Administrator

Prayer for Discernment in the choice of a new Bishop
