Our Diocesan Family November 2004
BUILDING BRIDGES

East Anglia, Cambodia & the Holy Land

News from Bishop Michael

PROJECTS FOR 2005

The Holy Land
In the November issue of our new Diocesan newspaper, ‘Our Diocesan Family’, you will have seen details of our new project in the Holy Land, supporting Sister Sophie’s orphanage in Bethlehem. All contributions for the Holy Land from now until the end of 2005 will go towards Sister Sophie work.

Cambodia
The Apostolic Prefect of Battambang (our twin diocese in Cambodia), Mgr Kike Figaredo, spent a week in our diocese from 4th-11th October. He gave several talks in parishes and to the headteachers of our Catholic schools, visited three schools in Bury St Edmunds and celebrated Mass at the Cathedral. Several nurses are considering spending some time in Cambodia, and several young people have already expressed an interested in a visit next Summer.

Now that we have sent the full sum (£16,000) for our first project, the learning centre and reservoir in Ta Om, Mgr Kike proposes that we take on three new projects over the coming year. All are centred on the village of Kompong Ko, the site of the largest Cambodian Catholic community before Pol Pot.

(A) The four-year training of two nurses/midwives for the village (roughly £3,000 all-inclusive).

(B) The restoration of the local kindergarten (roughly £3,000).

(C) Building a middle school for the local children (5 classrooms at roughly £2,700 each).

There are no Catholic schools in Cambodia. The diocese there seeks funding simply to build schools in the poorest villages for the service of the local people (98% Buddhist). Once build, they are handed over to the local government to staff and run. In this way, the Catholic Church is seen as seeking to serve the poor with no hidden agenda.

The total cost for all three projects is just under £20,000. We already have some money in our Cambodia Fund towards that total.
Every contribution helps, and people across the diocese have been wonderfully generous since we began our double twinning project in March this year. Fundraising has including cake-sales and the youth ‘Hobble with the Bishop’ as well as donations large and small.

It may be that a few people feel able to contribute the full cost of one classroom for the middle school (£2,700) in Kompong Ko or of one of the other projects. But every £1 you can send goes directly to the projects (there are no admin costs), and every £1 is deeply appreciated.

To send contributions, either use the form on the colour ‘Building Bridges’ leaflet, or that below. Or simply send a cheque with a letter making clear where you would like your donation to go.

CAN YOU HELP?
Individual donations as well as the fruits of fund-raising events in your parish, school or group, will be very welcome to support projects in the Holy Land and Cambodia. Unless you specify the money is for the Holy Land alone or Cambodia alone, all donations will be divided equally between them. Cheques should be made payable to the ‘RC Diocese of East Anglia’.

Please note that your gift will be divided equally between CAMBODIA and THE HOLY LAND unless you cross out one of them in this sentence.

Please send to:

SEND AN EXTRA CHRISTMAS CARD
We have far more to give to our friends in Cambodia and the Holy Land than our money, however important that indeed is. What they value most is our solidarity and friendship. Simple gestures such as sending a Christmas card mean a great deal to them, showing that they are not alone as they live their faith. I invite everyone in the diocese to send at least one extra Christmas card this year, ideally one to the Holy Land and one to Cambodia.

Please always send a proper religious card showing the real meaning of Christmas (a dignified Nativity scene, or Mary and Jesus).

The Cambodian and Arabic for ‘Happy Christmas’ are given on this sheet so that you can cut them out and paste them onto your cards.

As one way to spread our cards across the various communities, I suggest those with Christian names beginning with certain letters send a card to a particular numbered community (unless your parish is now twinned with a particular place). E.G.: everyone called ‘Michael’ could send a card to either or both addresses no. 4 under the Holy Land and Cambodia.

A, B, C: address 1 D, E, F, G: address 2
H, I, J, K: address 3 L, M, N, O: address 4
P, Q, R, S: address 5 T, U, V, X, Y, Z: address 6

Please check the correct postage carefully, and post by the latest date (6th December). The post for both countries for an average card (11-20 gms) is 68p.
