Archbishop Romero

ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO Archbishop Oscar Romero was murdered and martyred in El Salvador in 1980 for speaking out in God's name for justice and human rights for his people. For many Christians, he is an inspiration to work for the justice and peace which God demands for all his people. Pope Benedict spoke several times in 2007 about Archbishop Romero. On 25th March, at his noon blessing, the Holy Father referred to Romero as he prayed for the many missionary martyrs of recent years: 'These are bishops, priests, men and women religious, and lay people, cut down while fulfilling their mission of evangelisation and human promotion." And then, on the plane on the way to Brazil in May, he spoke to journalists who asked him about the process of Romero's beatification. He is reported as saying: 'Romero was certainly a great witness to the faith. He was a man of great Christian virtue, who was committed to peace and against the dictatorship. He was killed during the moment of consecration, therefore it was a truly incredible death, a testimony to the faith… That Romero as a person merits beatification, I have no doubt.' The Archbishop Romero Trust The Archbishop Romero Trust was founded in 2005, on the 25th anniversary of Archbishop Romero's death. Its Patrons are Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop John Sentamu and Archbishop Rowan Williams. Bishop Michael is one of the founding trustees. You can support the work of the Trust by making a donation or by becoming a 'Friend of Romero'.
