One of the major relief and development agencies in the UK, helping people throughout the Third World to help themselves with the fullest local involvement regardless of race, religious belief or politics. CAFOD works through the Church's organisations throughout the developing world, supporting over 1,000 long term, self-help development projects in 75 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe; projects such as health, education, food production and irrigation, AIDS education, prevention and care. CAFOD also responds to emergencies worldwide, providing relief and rehabilitation assistance to people in need through Caritas-the network of Catholic relief agencies and has a small number of special, Covenant Volunteers in the diocese who help with work in parishes and schools.
