NATIONAL SCRIPTURE CONFERENCE SET TO CELEBRATE SCRIPTURE AT THE HEART OF THE CHURCH

In a major event for the Year of Faith the Department for Evangelisation and Catechesis of the Bishops’ Conference, of England and Wales has organised a National Scripture Conference, entitled ‘The Word of the Lord: Celebrating Scripture at the Heart of the Church’. The event has been set up by the department’s Scripture Working Group, which is chaired by Fr Adrian Graffy, Brentwood diocese’s director for Evangelisation and Formation. The conference will be held at Ushaw College, Durham, from 24th to 26th April.

The event will provide the opportunity to reflect together on the central place of Scripture in the life of the Church. Conference speakers are Fr Timothy Radcliffe OP, Michelle Moran and Dom Henry Wansbrough. The conference is open to pastoral ministers, teachers, preachers, catechists, chaplains, and all those involved in the work of the Church at various levels.

A study guide to the Synod document Verbum Domini, written by Fr Adrian and other members of the Scripture Working Group, will be launched. The conference is structured around the three parts of this important document: the Word of God, the Word in the Church, and the Word for the World.

The programme includes a visit to the tomb of the Venerable Bede in Durham Cathedral, a conference dinner, time for networking, and for considering future initiatives.

Fr Adrian commented: ‘In this Year of Faith, and as a new pontificate begins, it is a good time to reflect on the central place of the Bible in the life of the Church. It will be a great opportunity to affirm the good work that is being done by so many to encourage love of the Bible, and to plan for future developments. It is excellent that we will be able to visit the tomb of St Bede, a great lover of the Bible and one who reminds us of the ancient Christian heritage of our land.’
